STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Puerto Ricans took to the streets of Old San Juan on Saturday, in solidarity with demonstrations against President Donald Trump in the United States.

Protesters gathered in front of La Fortaleza, the office of Gov. Jenniffer González, a Republican who supports Trump.

They waved Puerto Rican, Haitian and Dominican Republican national flags and shouted slogans against the deportations from the US.

U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents raided a well-known Dominican community in Puerto Rico, in a nod to Trump’s policies.

The arrests angered Puerto Rican officials and civil leaders who have created programs to help the island’s undocumented immigrants.

Jose Rodríguez, president of the Dominican human rights committee, accused the governor of Puerto Rico of “selling” the names and addresses of migrants with driver’s licenses to ICE.

“Tomorrow is Father’s Day. Many fathers and mothers will not be able to embrace their children because the governor sold out our information (to ICE) and had them arrested,” said Rodriguez.

Initially, the governor said that the president’s initiative would not impact immigrants in Puerto Rico.

However, she later remarked that the island “cannot afford to” ignore Trump’s directives on migrant arrests, emphasizing that federal funds are at risk.

An estimated 55,000 Dominicans live in Puerto Rico, although some experts believe the number could be even higher.

It’s unclear how many are undocumented.
