STORYLINE:
The Southeast Asian city of Bangkok is a bustling metropolis that is both Thailand’s largest city and capital.

With a population of over 15 million people in the Bangkok metropolitan area, it’s home to towering skyscrapers, parks and an elevated Skytrain line, as well as ancient sites.

Many international visitors to Bangkok arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which opened in 2006 and has two runways, receiving direct flights from Europe, Asia and Australia.

Visiting dignitaries and VIPs are often welcomed at Bangkok’s Government House of Thailand, the office of the nation’s prime minister, currently Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and her appointed cabinet ministers.

Paetongtarn, who took office last year, survived a no-confidence vote in March of this year, as the opposition alleged she was being unduly influenced by her father, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and was mismanaging the country.

For tourists exploring the Thai capital, many visit the Erawan shrine, a Hindu shrine set beneath two intersecting Skytrain lines which often provide a noisy backdrop to the religious site.

A 2015 bombing at the shrine killed 20 people and injured 120.

Thai authorities have said the bombing was revenge by a people-smuggling gang whose activities had been disrupted by the police.

However, some analysts suspect the bombing was the work of Uyghur separatists angry that Thailand had forcibly repatriated scores of Uyghurs to China in July that year.

One of Bangkok’s most famous sites, Wat Pho, is a major tourist draw and houses a 46-meter-long (151-foot-long) Reclining Buddha, which is covered in gold leaf.

The temple sits by Bangkok’s Chao Phraya river, near to the Grand Palace, arguably the centre piece of Bangkok’s famous sites and the former residence of past Thai kings.

Today it is used for ceremonial purposes, to welcome royal and foreign guests, as well as a popular tourist spot.

At Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn, visitors explore the steep and intricately decorated temple face and many opt to take part in photoshoots wearing traditional Thai dress.
