“In general, in May as the policy package continued to take effect, it plays a greater role in stabilizing the economy and promoting development. The economy was generally stable with steady progress, which fully demonstrates our economy’s resilience and vitality. But it is also important to recognize that there are still many external uncertainties and instabilities. Domestic demand needs further strengthening, and the foundation for a sustained economic recovery and improvement still needs to be consolidated.”

STORYLINE:
The Chinese markets retreated after the country’s industrial output rose 5.8% year-on-year in May.

That figure missed the expectations, despite the strong retail sales growth of 6.4%, which beat the forecast, according to data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics Monday.

At a news conference in Beijing, China’s National Bureau of Statistics spokesperson Fu Linghui said China’s economy was “generally stable with steady progress.”

However, he warned that “external uncertainties and instabilities” remain and emphasized that domestic demand still requires strengthening to solidify the foundation for sustained recovery.

Retail sales, a key measurement of consumer spending, rose to 6.4% in May, up from 5.1% in April.

Fu attributed the boost to government-led “trade-in programs for consumer goods” and robust online promotions during the May Day holiday.

Growth in industrial output increased 5.8% from a year earlier, slightly down from April’s 6.1% expansion.

Meanwhile, investment in fixed assets, which includes spending on infrastructure, real estate, machinery, and equipment, increased by 3.7% from January to May compared to the same period last year.

This marks a slight slowdown from the 4% growth recorded in the first four months of the year.

China’s economic outlook remains clouded by geopolitical uncertainties, including the impact of potential U.S. tariffs.

Although recent trade talks have shown some signs of progress, a comprehensive deal between the two countries has yet to be reached.
