STORYLINE:
Found off the coast of northwestern Malaysia, the island of Langkawi is one of the country’s most famous tourist destinations.
Langkawi was developed as a resort in the 1980s and given the World Geopark status by UNESCO in 2007.
Visitors can fly or take the ferry to the island across the Strait of Malacca, while private boats also offer daily sightseeing tours.
The name Langkawi is thought to have existed since the 15th century, tied to a local interpretation referring to the type of eagle which is found in the island.
A large statue of a Brahminy kite with its red-brown wings stands in Langkawi’s Eagle Square.
Another waterfront landmark is the Maha Tower which was completed in 2021.
