STORYLINE:
Brazil’s military conducted a security drill on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro in preparation for the BRICS Summit, which will take place in the city in early July.

Troops from all three branches of the military; army, navy, and air force were mobilized to carry out an exercise simulating a sarin gas attack, prompting an immediate response from specialized units.

Lieutenant Colonel André Luiz Bifano da Silva, Commander of the 1st Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense Battalion, said the operation is designed to ensure the safety of world leaders and the public during the summit.

"Within 15 minutes, we had all our resources in place to detect the chemical threat, assess how the contamination would spread through the city, decontaminate victims, carry out evacuations, even by air, and collect samples for laboratory analysis," said da Silva.

The BRICS Summit will take place on July 6–7 in Rio de Janeiro and will gather heads of state from the 11 BRICS member countries, along with invited partners.
