4. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, President of France:
"No to military actions aimed at regime change — because no one knows what comes next. Haven’t we collectively seen the consequences this has had in the region and beyond? Does anyone think what was done in Iraq in 2003 was a good idea? Does anyone think what was done in Libya last decade was a good idea? No."

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, President of France:
"Look, it was primarily President Trump who raised the ceasefire yesterday — as your colleagues who interviewed him, including CNN, reported. And when he said, ‘I have to go back because talks are underway, we’re going to talk, and we need to talk,’ that’s generally what you’d call ceasefire negotiations."

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron warned Tuesday that a violent push for regime change in Iran would spark "chaos" and further destabilize the Middle East, pushing back against increasingly aggressive rhetoric from Donald Trump.

"We do not want to see Iran acquire nuclear weapons or ballistic capabilities," Macron said. "But I believe the greatest mistake today would be to pursue regime change in Iran through military means, as that would lead to chaos," he told reporters.

"Does anyone think what was done in Iraq in 2003 was a good idea? Does anyone think what was done in Libya last decade was a good idea? No," Macron said.

The comments came a day after Macron told the press that Trump was cutting his G7 summit visit short to work on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran — a claim Trump angrily denied on social media Tuesday.

"Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong!" Trump posted on his social media. "He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington."

Macron, for his part, appeared unfazed.

"I suppose you can see, as I do, that there’s clearly been a change of position — but I’m not responsible for changes of mind within the U.S. administration," he said.

"I’ve never seen him (Trump) engage in military operations," Macron added. "So, I think he’s trying to put pressure."

Macron’s remarks came after Trump declared on social media that the U.S. knows where Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is hiding "but doesn’t want him killed — for now."

The former U.S. president also called for Iran’s "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER" as a conflict with Israel continues to escalate.
