2. SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jonah Kariuki, father to Boniface who was shot in the head by police:
"I saw a clip on my phone then I was called in the evening at around 8 pm from those who were working with him. They told me that my son had been shot. From the clip I was seeing, I thought it was not my son but they confirmed it was him. I looked at the phone again and my heart skipped a beat."

4. SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jonah Kariuki, father to Boniface who was shot in the head by police:
"I would say that those police officers need to take responsibility because they also have children and the person they hurt is somebody’s child. It is someone who has hustled before they reached where they are. He has gone to school and gone through a lot and in our work, which is hawking sometimes you get hurt. He would stay at home for two weeks and I usually took care of him. So I feel a lot of pain and that police officer has committed a crime and stern action should be taken against him."
5. SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jonah Kariuki, father to Boniface who was shot in the head by police:
"I am very fearful but am hopeful that God can do something and the boy recovers. But even at night, I am just crying even when I went home I just sat down in grief."
6. Set up shot of Okiya Omtatah, a Kenyan senator and human rights activist
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Okiya Omtatah a Kenyan senator and human rights activist:
"We saw he was critically injured but there are so many people who were injured by police and injured by those goons. We need accountability for these people. We cannot live in a country like this. This country is called the Republic of Kenya, being a republic it means a country governed by law not governed by rogue men and so we are demanding that tomorrow’s demonstrations be peaceful, be massive until we get accountability for all the excesses that have been unleashed upon us by the regime of William Ruto and his acolytes."

STORYLINE:
Activists and the father of a Kenyan civilian who was shot at close range by police during the latest protests over the alleged killing of a blogger in custody on Wednesday demanded accountability and called for the officer who shot him to be charged.

Boniface Kariuki’s father, Jonah Kariuki, told journalists his only son remained under intensive care after he underwent surgery on Tuesday night.

He said the bullet went through his son’s head, just above the ear, but the surgery had been “successful” and “his heart was beating.”

The 22-year-old Kariuki, a hawker like his father, was holding a packet of face masks and is believed to have been caught up in a confrontation with two officers in Nairobi as hundreds of protesters clashed with police.

One officer, who had concealed his face with a mask, shot him in the head as he walked away.

Police in a statement expressed concern and said the officer had been arrested.

Tuesday’s protests in the capital followed tensions over the death of the blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead while in custody at the Central Police Station.

Ojwang was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya for what police called publishing “false information” about a top police official on social media.

The hospital spokesperson said the injuries included gunshot wounds.
