2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Dan Goldman, (D) New York:
“We are very concerned about what conditions these immigrants are being held in while this mass deportation scheme is underway. We observed the courtroom before that, where the government is trying to dismiss their cases. These are non-violent, non-criminal immigrants going through the proper process.”

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Jerry Nadler, (D) New York
“What are they hiding? If normally you assume a police officer, an FBI person, has an identification, if he misbehaves you can complain about him, you can file a report. But these people are wearing masks and are totally unidentified. The question is why?”

STORYLINE:
Just a day after New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate, Brad Lander, was arrested and later released by ICE at a federal facility in lower Manhattan, an attempt by U.S. congressmen to inspect the facility was denied.
New York representatives Dan Goldman and Jerry Nadler, both democrats, said that their constitutional oversight authority allows them to inspect detention centers and had even given advanced notice of their arrival, yet they were turned away Wednesday.
“We are very concerned about what conditions these immigrants are being held in while this mass deportation scheme is underway,” said Representative Goldman.
Rep. Nadler wants to know why both ICE and FBI agents working in the building were wearing masks to cover up their identities, “What are they hiding?,” he said.
ICE is stating despite some immigrants staying over for 1 or more days, that 26 Federal Plaza is not a detention center, but instead is a “processing center” so the representatives have no legal authority to inspect the facility.
