"During the last three governments there’s been no progress. We’ve simply become another statistic — and we shouldn’t be. Femicide happens daily, people disappear every day across the country. In my case it’s my younger sister, Janine Ontaneda, whose disappearance you can verify on social media. She’s been missing since April 7 of this year. It’s been nearly 90 days without a response from the Prosecutor’s Office."

9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Juan Ignacio Ilvalle, member of the Regional Foundation for Human Rights Defense (INREDH):
"The number of disappearances has risen so much that the official figure now stands at 20 people missing every day. Forced or involuntary disappearances are hidden under other crimes, which only increases the uncertainty and anguish of family members and friends."

STORYLINE:
Relatives of missing people in Ecuador on Wednesday protested the lack of attention that authorities have given to their cases.

Richard Ontaneda, the brother of missing person Janine Ontaneda, said his sister had been missing for about 90 days and had not received "a response from the Prosecutor’s Office" about the case.

Juan Ignacio Ilvalle, a member of the Regional Foundation for Human Rights Defense (INREDH), said investigating disappearances in Ecuador is difficult.

"Forced or involuntary disappearances are hidden under other crimes, which only increases the uncertainty and anguish of relatives," said Ilvalle.
