STORYLINE:
Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is home to a number of historic landmarks that reflect the nation’s complicated cultural identity and revolutionary struggles.

One of the most prominent is the Rizal Monument, built in honor of Filipino nationalist José Rizal, who was executed by Spanish authorities in 1896 for the crime of rebellion.

Today, it is continuously guarded by members of the Philippine Marine Corps.

Nearby stands the Bonifacio Shrine, which includes the Katipunan Revolution Monument in Hero’s Park. Unveiled in 1998, the sculpture depicts the revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio and commemorates his role in the fight against Spanish rule.

Manila’s Chinatown, located in the Binondo district, is said to be the oldest in the world. In 2023, Mayor Honey Lacuna marked the district’s 430th founding anniversary.
