STORYLINE:
The head of U.N.’s nuclear watchdog convened an emergency meeting of the Board of Governors in Vienna on Monday.
Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, called the meeting in light of the "urgent situation" in Iran, following the U.S. strikes on three of the country’s nuclear sites.
“In view of the increasingly serious situation in terms of nuclear safety and security, the Board of Governors will meet in an extraordinary session tomorrow, which I will address,” Grossi said in a statement on the official IAEA website.
Grossi has been the target of much Iranian criticism in recent days for what they describe as conflicting statements that incited Israel’s initial attack.
Other key officials present at the meeting were Reza Najafi, the Iran ambassador to the U.N., and Howard Solomon, the U.S. ambassador (Chargé d’Affaires) to International Organizations in Vienna.
The U.S. strikes, confirmed by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, hit the Fordo and Natanz enrichment facilities, as well as the Isfahan nuclear site. Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog said there were no immediate signs of radioactive contamination around them.
