STORYLINE:
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem recognized Wednesday Costa Rica’s support in the Trump administration’s fight against drugs and irregular migrants.

Noem praised President Rodrigo Chaves for "his ability to be positive and progressive on this because we know that many times those dangerous drugs are coming through Costa Rica before they get to the United States."

"We are extremely grateful and are going to help him with that," she added.

After a bilateral meeting, Noem and Chaves signed a memorandum of understanding on security and information sharing.

Costa Rica has received hundreds of deportees from various nations sent by the United States as President Donald Trump’s administration tries to accelerate deportations.

This was Noem’s second stop on a Central America trip that will also take her to Honduras and Guatemala.

Noem kicked off her trip Tuesday in Panama, where she met with President José Raúl Mulino and viewed a deportation flight bound for Colombia.

Noem has been among the more high-profile members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet, traveling extensively and maintaining a robust social media presence.

She is often the public face of his mass deportation effort, frequently goes out on immigration enforcement operations and has appeared in commercials encouraging immigrants in the country illegally to voluntarily leave the U.S.
