STORYLINE:
As a fragile cease-fire in the war between Israel and Iran held for a second day on Wednesday, supporters of Venezuela’s government took to the streets at the urging of President Nicolás Maduro’s ruling party PSUV.
Maduro has proposed holding a summit for peace in the Middle East.
Venezuela and Iran have cultivated close ties for more than two decades, dating back to the presidency of Hugo Chávez.
Under Maduro, the alliance has deepened, with Tehran supplying fuel to Caracas during a period of acute shortages and the two countries expanding cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and trade.
In 2009 Venezuela broke off relations with Israel in protest of that country’s military actions in the Gaza Strip.
