So we at home, we do pool, here we do the beach!”

STORYLINE:
Many Athenians rushed to the beaches as a major heatwave hits Greece, with temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in the country’s first heatwave of the summer.
Tourists and locals shaded under umbrellas and swam in the sea to cool off.
“Well, we’re definitely drinking plenty of water, sunscreen, you know, where I can, I put something on my head, a hat or something to protect my scalp,” said Gidget White, a tourist from Dallas, Texas.
The heat will intensify through Friday, peaking at 40-41°C (104-106°F) inland.
Tourists at the Acropolis of Athens, visiting the ancient Parthenon and other sites had challenging times.
Tourist guide Georgina Gaidanou said "it is difficult" for the group she is leading.
“I told them to have water with them and we were very lucky today because we find a place under the shade,” she said.
The entire wider Athens area, as well as several Aegean islands, were on Level 4 of a 5-level scale for the danger of wildfires due to the weather conditions.
The heatwave is expected to last until the end of the weekend where temperatures are forecast to ease.
