STORYLINE:
Indigenous women from Bolivia’s capital gathered Friday for the Cholita Paceña 2025 contest, an event that honors Aymara identity through traditional dress and cultural expression.

The competition aims to recognize the significant role of Aymara women in preserving and promoting Andean cultural traditions.

Participants presented themselves in traditional outfits, including mantas, bowler hats, skirts, and jewelry, reflecting symbols deeply rooted in the region’s history.

This year’s winner was Teresa Marisol Mayta, who had to surpass her opponents not only in beauty but also in her knowledge of the Aymara lifestyle and command of the indigenous Andean languages.

“The identity of the chola paceña depends on the people of La Paz. If we allow external cultures to influence us, it will be lost." said contest winner Teresa Marisol Mayta.

In 2013, the city of La Paz officially declared the Chola Paceña an Intangible Cultural Heritage, acknowledging her significance in Bolivia’s cultural landscape.
