STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people took to the streets in the freezing dusk of Chile’s capital on Saturday to watch a performance calling for greater protection of the world’s oceans.
The show, entitled "Ocean", tells the story of a castaway and his encounter with the many species inhabiting the South Pacific.
Created from recycled plastics, more than 20 sea creatures were brought to life in Santiago to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the marine ecosystems along Chile’s coast, organizers said.
Iconic species such as jack mackerels, pejeperros, bilagay, flounders and conger eels, among others, made appearances during the show.
The creators, Colectivo Cían, spent three months researching the morphology of these species, conducting creative workshops, and experimenting with layers of plastic bags.
As temperatures dropped to around 9 degrees Celsius (48 degree Fahrenheit), the free event— featuring a 12-meter-long luminous whale and glowing fish —lit up the streets of the Puente Alto district, where the performance lasted approximately two hours.
