“Force is not the right way to solve international disputes. It only brings more hostility and tension. Humanity cannot return to the law of the jungle, where the strong bully the weak. Still less can we allow hegemonism and the me-first approach to get its way. Facing a world fraught with changes and turbulence, all sides must shoulder the responsibilities to firmly uphold the authority of the UN, defend the UN-centered international system, the international order based on international law.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Han Zheng, Chinese Vice President:
“The world will never retreat to a state of seclusion and fragmentation. Countries deepening interdependence and seeking win-win cooperation are the inevitable path toward common prosperity and offers strong safeguards for lasting peace in the world. The problems of economic globalization can only be solved through further development of globalization. There are no winners in tariff wars or trade wars. Unilateralism and protectionism are a dead end and will only undermine the common interests of all countries.”

STORYLINE:
China’s Vice President Han Zheng voiced opposition to the use of force in resolving international disputes at the opening ceremony of the annual World Peace Forum in Beijing on Thursday.

Without naming any specific country or conflict, Han warned that force would only escalate “hostility and tension” and called on the international community to reject hegemonism and uphold a “UN-centered international system.”

Han also stressed that economic globalization is an irreversible trend and that “deepening interdependence” and “win-win cooperation” between countries would offer “strong safeguards for lasting peace in the world.”

In his speech, Han reiterated China’s long-standing opposition to the trade war.

“There are no winners in tariff wars or trade wars. Unilateralism and protectionism are a dead end and will only undermine the common interests of all countries,” he said.

The forum, co-hosted by Tsinghua University and the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs from July 2 to 4, brings together former government officials and academics to discuss global issues.

This year’s agenda includes four plenary sessions with respective focus on the international order and world peace, pan-securitization and the global security challenges, the role of the Global South in promoting world peace and major power coordination and conflict resolution, according to the organizer.
