"I made it clear that Putin’s war poses a direct threat to our security. An end to this war against Ukraine, which violates international law, and the foreign support for this crime, as well as restoring the peace order in Europe, are core interests of the Federal Republic of Germany. Therefore, we must prevent Russia from waging this war with the supply of crucial war goods. I emphasized once again how important it is for China to do everything possible to ensure that such goods do not reach Russia from the People’s Republic and ultimately support this war."

"The Ukraine crisis is occurring in Europe and affecting the world. China fully understands the legitimate concerns of the European and German sides. Our position is clear and consistent, which is to insist on promoting peace talks and not providing lethal weapons to the parties in conflict. We strictly control the export of dual-use items, including drones."

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Johann Wadephul, German Foreign Minister:
"Currently, unilateral and often not very transparent export restrictions on rare earths are causing great concern for us and especially for our companies. This uncertainty is damaging our trade relations and it is also harming China’s image in Germany as a reliable trading partner overall."

STORYLINE:
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Thursday called on China to use its influence on Russia to help end the war in Ukraine.
After meeting his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, for a bilateral meeting in Berlin, Wadephul told reporters at a joint news conference that he reiterated the importance of China doing "everything possible" to prevent Russia from obtaining "crucial" supplies that would assist them in continuing the war in Ukraine.
"An end to this war against Ukraine, which violates international law, and the foreign support for this crime, as well as restoring the peace order in Europe, are core interests of the Federal Republic of Germany," he added.
Wang said China "fully understands the legitimate concerns" of the Germany and Europe as a whole.
"Our position is clear and consistent, which is to insist on promoting peace talks and not providing lethal weapons to the parties in conflict," he said, adding that China "strictly controls" the export of dual-use items, including drones.
China has provided strong diplomatic support for Russia in the more than three years since it launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbor, along with an economic lifeline through the trade in energy and consumer goods.
Earlier this week, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said during a visit to Kyiv that Germany aims to help Ukraine manufacture more weapons more quickly.
An emboldened Russia has ramped up military offensives on two fronts in Ukraine, scattering Kyiv’s precious reserve troops and threatening to expand the fighting to a new Ukrainian region as each side seeks an advantage before the fighting season wanes in the autumn.
Moscow aims to maximize its territorial gains before seriously considering a full ceasefire, analysts and military commanders said.
