“Why? Why did they invite (Iran)? We were the ones who invited them, in this case, Brazil invited them. It was the president (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) who invited them. So, we need to understand why they were invited, considering it goes against what he preaches to us.”

STORYLINE:
A pro-Israel non-profit organization staged a demonstration on Rio de Janeiro’s Ipanema Beach on Sunday to protest Iran’s policies regarding LGBTQ+ people.
Rainbow flags and symbolic gallows were spread across the sand, along with a sign reading, "Iran kills gays in public squares."
The demonstration was organized by the international NGO StandWithUs at a traditional meeting spot for the LGBTQ+ community in the city.
It took place as the city hosts the 17th BRICS Summit, which Iran recently joined as a new member of the bloc.
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, which is considered one of the most repressive countries in the world for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
“We need to understand why they were invited, considering it goes against what he (President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) preaches to us,” said Felipe Batista, one of the organizers of the demonstration.
Karina Howlett, a journalist who was observing the installation questioned Brazil’s decision to invite Iran to the group.
"(Brazil) is extending its hand to a country that, on the contrary, should be questioned and held accountable for what is happening in Iran,” she said.
BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but the group last year expanded to include Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The BRICS bloc of developing nations on Sunday condemned the increase of tariffs and attacks on Iran. The group’s declaration also took aim at Israel’s military actions in the Middle East.
