Who will bear the brunt of proposed US-EU tariff increases? | DW News

US President Donald Trump said he would slap 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico starting on August 1st. Weeks of negotiations with Brussels failed to reach a comprehensive trade deal. Trump blamed ”long-term and persistent trade deficits” with the EU. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the EU is prepared to impose countermeasures if necessary, in order to protect its interests. On Mexico, Trump says the government has not done enough to curb cross-border drug trafficking. Trump made similar tariff threats against dozens of other trading partners earlier this week.
