4. SOUNDBITE (English) James Lafayette, Philadelphia resident:
“I think she need to pay them. You know, inflation is up. The money ain’t worth nothing. She makes a quarter million dollars a year. They gave her a COLA (cost-of-living adjustment). What you think about people that’s making forty-eight, fifty-thousand dollars a year? You don’t think they need a COLA too? Everybody needs it. And inflation is out the roof.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlton Williams, Director, Clean and Green Initiatives of Philadelphia City:
“When you’re trying to move two thousand tons of trash per day, it can get that way pretty quickly. I will tell you that we cleaned up that site in the morning or one of the sites in the morning. And in the afternoon, it looks like we weren’t there. So we’ll continue to increase that capacity of the amount of people that you have to try to reduce those piles and gain control of those sites. But the illegal dumping at that location is causing that problem to exasperate and we need to address that issue.”
8. Various of residents dropping of their trash
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Carlton Williams, Director, Clean and Green Initiatives of Philadelphia City:
“It’s operating the way we intended to operate at this location. People are placing trash inside the Dumpster. They’re not full, you see we have capacity down in these locations. Once this one’s full, they get pulled, another Dumpster is dropped, and we want to continue to provide that cycle so that residents don’t have to bear, worrying about trash that is dumped around the site and around the location.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Falcone, Philadelphia resident:
“But Philadelphia is a great city, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that people have to work together, they have to come together. The citizens are starting to get frustrated, and it’s getting out of hand now. Trash is all over the place in different areas. And people don’t come out at night because you’ve got all kinds of bugs and rodents and raccoons and this and that. And you have to be careful, you know. It’s too much.”

STORYLINE:
As Philadelphia city workers continue their strike into day 7, mounting trash piles in some parts of the city are causing concerns for residents and officials.

City officials have strongly urged residents to follow the collection guidelines imposed when the strike began Tuesday.

They also urged residents to report problems at the trash collection sites, and noted trash is being cleared as fast as possible and the city is working to open more sites and provide more workers to help the resident.

The latest talks between the city and leaders of District Council 33 — the largest of four major unions representing city workers — ended late Saturday without a deal, and no new talks were scheduled for now. Both sides have said they were willing to continue negotiations.
