8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sherif Fathy, Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Minister:
"These are historic domes. The first one, the al-Shabih dome has a religious nature because he (Yahya al-Shabih) was from ‘Ahl al-Bait’ (descendants of the prophet) and the second dome belongs to one of the Mamluks who also had an artifact and a dome that is worth preserving. So the two domes are considered part of Egypt’s historic artifacts or part of Egyptian history, one is from the Mamluk period and the other one is from the Islamic period before it. And both are places that are worth looking after and preserving."

9. Tilt-up of dome of Safiyy al-Din Jawhar

13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Gareth Bayley, British Ambassador to Egypt:
"Through this effort we are targeting the preservation of heritage as well as the participation of local communities in their heritage. We are also aiming to encourage professionals in preserving their heritage as well as training and raising awareness about protecting the great and beautiful Egyptian heritage. I personally as an ambassador feel like I am in the beating heart of Islamic and old Cairo. We can’t see scenes (like this) in Egypt except in this area, where we feel the spirit and pride of people in preserving the heritage here."

STORYLINE:
Egypt reopened two historic shrines in Old Cairo on Tuesday, following the completion of conservation work on them.

One of the shrines goes back to the 1300s and was built to remember Safiyy al-Din Jawhar, a Mamluk-era commander.

The other shrine was built for Yahya al-Shabih, who is a descendant of the family of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

"The two domes are considered part of Egypt’s historic artifacts or part of Egyptian history," said Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, at an event on Tuesday to reopen the domes. "Both are places that are worth looking after and preserving."

The restoration work on the shrines was a collaboration between Egyptian civil society and the British Council in Egypt, led by the Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Ministry.

The conservation work included ground water drainage, masonry repair, cleaning decorations as well as the restoration of the cenotaphs and windows.

The project is part of the Egyptian government’s attempts to preserve the country’s and promote tourism.
