“The problem at this park is always the human beings. In the end, our dogs are our children. And we want to take care of them and make sure nobody else touches them. And we must realize that today is a day dedicated to our dogs. It’s a special day for them to enjoy. It’s not for us. We can cool down a bit, but it is all about the dogs.”

“At the beach there can be too many waves and rough seas, but here they can always set foot on the bottom. They don’t want to swim. They prefer to jump around in the water and play with their owners. There’s not a chance that they won’t like the water here.”

STORYLINE:
As much of Europe swelters, it’s not just people who need help with the dog days of summer.
Pet owners have to consider how to both shield and cool down furry family members as intense heatwaves become more common.
It was 34 degrees Celsius at noon when the dogs started to arrive at a canine waterpark in Catalonia with their owners.
It’s called “Perros al Agua” (Spanish for “Let’s go for a swim, dogs”) and it welcomes all dogs no matter what size or breed.
Originally the the facility was a training centre for canines.
One very hot sunny day in 2014, the owners decided to turn on the irrigation sprinklers to refresh the dogs.
To their surprise, all the dogs went straight towards the water and forgot about their training class.
A pool was then installed and “Perros al Agua” opened its doors the following summer.
Manager Didac Zamora said that the dogs are the VIPs there.
They can currently accommodate up to 400 dogs simultaneously.
