STORYLINE:
A lifeless whale was found Wednesday stranded just meters off a beach in the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

A local fisherman reported the finding to the authorities during the early hours.

Experts from the Cethus Whale Conservation and Research Center believe the whale became stranded on a sandbank before the sea current washed it to the rocky shoreline.

Authorities, including Civil Defense and local police, cordoned off the area while they waited for the high tide to transport the carcass to deeper waters to study the cause of death and confirm the species.

Miguel Iñíguez, president of the Cethus whale conservation and research center, said they believe it is a Sei Whale calf of only a few weeks old, given its length of 22,9 feet long (7 meters).

Iñíguez said the species is known to migrate through Argentine waters from Southern Patagonia to Brazil.

He said this is a species that once was on the brink of extinction.

It’s not uncommon for whales to enter the Río de la Plata estuary, especially if they are disoriented or unwell, with freshwater often worsening their condition.

Experts stressed the importance of removing the carcass due to possible health risks, as the cause of death remains unknown.

The whale’s remains may be preserved for scientific study or museum display, depending on its condition and if further studies confirm it is a Sei whale.
