STORYLINE:
Firefighters in Chile scrambled Thursday to rescue residents and their pets from a building that filled with smoke from a fire in its basement.
Mario Desbordes, Mayor of the Chilean capital Santiago, said that while the fire was still blazing, over 100 people were rescued from the building and there were no reported injuries.
Desbordes said the fire started in the building’s basement, used to store cardboard and plastic boxes.
The first responders’ teams reported that 40 people were treated after inhaling smoke or for shock.
Residents of the high-rise building were mainly concerned about their pets and thanked the firefighters for helping them to evacuate without leaving them behind.
The firefighter department confirmed the fire did not spread to the apartments.
