"We’re here at the Southern District of New York courthouse where U.S. District Judge William Pauley, III has just sentenced Michael Cohen to three years in prison — thirty six months — to be followed by a term of three years of supervised release. There was also an order that he pay back to the federal government a half million dollars in forfeiture. He was also ordered to pay $1.39 million dollars back to the government in restitution, and that was money that he owes the IRS. And, of course, he pleaded guilty on several counts of tax evasion."

"One of the most significant moments of today’s proceedings was Michael Cohen’s emotional statement to the court. He broke down at several points, took responsibility for his actions and said that he — well, he attributed his crimes to a ‘blind loyalty’ that he felt to President Trump for which he apologized to the American people. But perhaps even more surprising when he told the judge that he considered today to be his first day of freedom, despite his prison sentence, and described a personal and mental incarceration that he has been under since he began to work for the Trump Organization and serve as Mr. Trump’s personal attorney several years ago."

"There was a significant disagreement before the sentence was pronounced about the degree of cooperation that Mr. Cohen has provided prosecutors in the Southern District of New York. Of course, Mr. Cohen has been credited with his cooperation to the special counsel’s office investigating Russian interference in the 2016 elections. But Mr. Cohen’s defense attorney Guy Petrillo disputed the government’s characterization that Mr. Cohen had held back in his interviews with the Southern District in New York. Indeed, he said that Mr. Cohen stands ready and willing to cooperate moving forward and to answer any questions, and he disputed the government’s characterization that Mr. Cohen had not been forthcoming and said that it was an unfair — fundamentally unfair for the government to claim that."
STORYLINE:
Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s once-devoted lawyer and all-around fixer, was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison for allowing what he said was his "blind loyalty" to Trump to lead him astray. "I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds," he said.
Standing alone at the defense table, Cohen, 52, shook his head slightly and closed his eyes as the judge pronounced the sentence for crimes that included lying about his boss’ business dealings in Russia and funneling hush money to two women who said they had sex with Trump — payments that Cohen said were made at the president’s direction.
