Syria’s government denies reports of troop deployment to the south | DW News

In Syria, the ceasefire meant to end deadly clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters appears close to collapsing. The monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is now reporting new clashes west of Sweida. The warring parties are described as "tribal fighters and Bedouin supported by the authorities on one side, against Druze fighters on the other". Syrian government forces tasked with quelling the violence had withdrawn from the area on Thursday as part of a US-brokered ceasefire. Today, there is uncertainty about whether Syrian government troops are returning to the south to deal with the new violence. Syrian media and international news agencies have been reporting that government troops were preparing to redeploy, citing an array of sources. A spokesman for Syria’s interior ministry later issued a public denial of this.
