4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Oles Oliinyk, Kyiv resident:
"Firstly, it is not statements that should be looked at and analyzed, but rather some actions that should or should not follow them. Secondly, regarding secondary sanctions, if they are introduced, this is also a possibility, it may work, but to some extent, not very significant. There are a million factors that affect Russian oil exports. Yes, this could be one of the negative factors, but how much will this actually affect Russia’s oil and gas revenues, perhaps by some percentage? I don’t think it will be very large. But again, sanctions should be introduced first, these mechanisms should work, then we can look at some results and analyze them."

6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Oles Oliinyk, Kyiv resident:
"A certain amount of action can stop the war, and what will Trump’s actions be… will they be at all, how many there will be? If we take the situation as a whole, it hardly looks like this will fundamentally change anything. The fact that it can reduce Russia’s military power by some five percent is possible. But it seems to me that the horizon of the impact of all Trump’s actions on reducing Russian military power is up to ten percent, hardly more."
7. Wide of Nina Tokar walking with her grandson
8. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Nina Tokar, Kyiv resident:
"I don’t even know… this Putin… I don’t understand this person at all. It seems to me that he will do everything to destroy Ukraine. Of course, it (Trump’s announcements) may speed up (the end of the war). But for some reason I have so little faith in this Trump, to be honest, I have very little faith in him. He says one thing today, and tomorrow he may say something else. So I don’t know, I can’t even answer. I have little faith in Trump specifically."
9. Closeup of a poster reading (English): "Azovstal. Free Mariupol Defenders"
10. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Nina Tokar, Kyiv resident:
"I have hope that he (Trump) will give us weapons and maybe this will all end faster. I think so. If this Putin had less help from the North Koreans, Chinese and everyone else around, maybe the war would have ended."
11. Wide of people walking
12. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Artem Horchakov, Kyiv resident:
"Maybe it lifts the mood of society as a whole. He just said a lot, and if there was some result, maybe his words would have been more weighty. And he said and said, people say a lot. Let’s see how it goes. Let’s hope for the best. I hope that everything will be the way we want. And we want peace, for the war in Ukraine to end, and for all the guys to return alive. Because my father is also a soldier, my friends are military, this affects every family, and me too."

STORYLINE:
Ukrainians reacted with a mixture of hope and frustration after U.S. President Donald Trump announced new measures targeting Russia over its ongoing war in Ukraine.
Trump on Monday threatened Russia with steep tariffs, and unveiled a rejuvenated pipeline for American weapons to reach Ukraine.
"If we take the situation as a whole, it hardly looks like this will fundamentally change anything," said Kyiv resident Oles Oliinyk.
Another local told the AP he had hope the measures would improve Ukraine’s position on the battlefield.
