10. SOUNDBITE: (English) James Wolfensohn, World Bank President:
"What I think is remarkable is the fact that you already have a functioning cabinet and you have, what I think, is a first class operating budget – they call it the ordinary budget. And that’s a document that many other countries would have been very happy to produce after years in government. So, we’re prepared to give support. I think everyone needs to see what happens in the loya jirga (grand council that will choose the next government) because, quite obviously, one will need to reassess after that time. That’s not just us, that’s everybody. But I see no immediate reason to doubt that we’ll continue, aggressively, to support this country."

STORYLINE:

After an absence of over twenty years, the World Bank resumed operations in Afghanistan on Wednesday, committing to help rebuild and develop the devastated country.

World Bank president, James Wolfensohn, met with the country’s interim leader, Hamid Karzai in the capital, Kabul, during a one-day visit.

He also visited a community centre in a poor area of Kabul.

Wolfensohn made the trip to the Afghan capital while on a five-day visit to neighbouring Pakistan.

The World Bank has not been working in Afghanistan since the country was invaded by the former Soviet Union in 1979.
