STORYLINE:
Druze and other Damascene residents on Wednesday expressed fear for the lives of loved ones in Sweida, rejecting further escalating violence.

Syrian government officials and leaders in the Druze religious minority announced Wednesday a renewed ceasefire after days of clashes that have threatened to unravel the country’s postwar political transition and have drawn intervention by Syria’s powerful neighbor, Israel.

It was not immediately clear if the new agreement, announced by Syrian Interior Ministry and in a video message by a Druze religious leader, would hold.

A previous ceasefire announced the day before quickly fell apart.

Before the ceasefire was announced, protesters took to the streets in Damascus, carrying banners with different slogans, such as "a Syrian shedding another Syrian’s blood is forbidden".

Mahdi Azzam, a Syrian Druze man living in Jaramana suburb in Damascus, said that his female relatives left his village, Ariqa, for their safety.

Men of his family and other villagers stayed there in order to protect the village from looting.

"There is no security," Azzam stressed.

Sami Mohmoud, one of the protesters, said during a demonstration that all Syrians should stand united.

"I’m here to say that a Syrian shedding blood of another Syrian is forbidden. This is something we have said for a long time, and we will keep on saying it," Mohmoud added.
