“We arrived at the gate (of the aid distribution center). The Americans were standing there and announced over loudspeakers that no one should advance. The Jews (how many in Gaza refer to Israelis) started shooting from one side, and the Americans did as well. There were turnstiles at the gate. The young men were rushing through them. Those who fell down — we couldn’t lift them. Everyone was on top of each other. We tried to pull the young men up from the ground and help them, but we couldn’t.”

“The Americans started throwing stun grenades toward us, and some people were injured by them. I saw a man who was wounded in the head by shrapnel from a stun grenade. We took him aside to give him first aid. When I looked at the area where the young men had gathered, there were many martyrs (people who had been killed). We pulled the dead out and took them to Nasser (Hospital). What happened today wasn’t aid; it was a massacre in every sense of the word.”

“The Americans stopped us and said, ‘There is no aid.’ But the young men saw that there was aid at the exit gate. They went in to get the potatoes. When the gate opened slightly, people started grabbing the potatoes and trampling each other. The children who fell were crushed and died of suffocation almost immediately.”

STORYLINE:
Twenty Palestinians were killed at a food distribution center run by an Israeli-backed American organization in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, mostly from being trampled, the group said.
They were the first deaths reported at one of the group’s sites, though hundreds have been killed by Israeli forces on the roads leading to them, according to witnesses and health officials.
Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 54 others, including 11 children, according to hospital officials.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation accused the Hamas militant group of fomenting unrest at the food distribution center, causing the stampede.
For the first time since its operations began in May, “a large number” of people in the crowd were armed with pistols, GHF spokesperson Chapin Fay told reporters. He said an American medic was stabbed and wounded.
