8. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Vanessa Gavioli, curator, Fashion and Costume Museum:
“We started with the 1920s, which in this selection we have placed in relation to Orientalism and other cultures that were grafted onto the flapper culture, then we come to the post (First World) war years, where we look at the evolution of the silhouette of the evening dress from 1922 to 1935. Then we move on to the magnificent 1930s, of the grand evening dress, we have two magnificent pieces by Schiaparelli and two magnificent pieces by Vionnet and we arrive at the 1950s and 1970s and we close with a triumph of sequins by Enrico Coveri.”

12. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Vanessa Gavioli, curator, Fashion and Costume Museum:
“In the 1900s, the interplay between painting and decorative art, including the manufacture of clothing and accessories, is very important. So, we thought together with the director to create sets where the cultural environment of the period is evoked. Specifically, behind me you can see some magnificent (paintings) by Galileo Chini, a triptych that in a way evokes the ambience of opera and theatre. One of the dresses on display, the black one with the gold decorations, belonged to Galileo Chini’s wife, and was worn at the premiere of Turandot at La Scala in 1926.”
13. Various of Italian-made evening dress that belonged to Franca Florio (Italian noblewoman, protagonist of the Belle Époque)
14. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Vanessa Gavioli, curator, Fashion and Costume Museum:
“One of the most important wardrobes we preserve is that of Franca Florio (Italian noblewoman, protagonist of the Belle Époque), the dress behind me belongs to that wardrobe and it is an extraordinary dress. It’s a Charleston dress, 1920s, but it has beaded decorations that evoke fireworks. This stylization of the decoration of the dress that makes it almost a pictorial surface also reminds us of the Orientalism that was prevalent in those years.”
