STORYLINE:
The cemetery of La Tirana town, in the desertic region of Northern Chile, on Thursday filled with Catholic devotees dressed as "Devils’, who danced and marched to pay tribute to their deceased loved ones.
They were taking in the celebrations of Our Lady of Carmen, Chile’s patron saint.
Every July, thousands of devotees and visitors gather in La Tirana for ten days, with the peak of the celebration taking place on July 16th, when many danced in costumes through the night to mark the day of the patron.
Thursday’s celebrations are reserved for the deceased relatives, and the younger generations said their devotion is feeding a new tradition that they learned from their elders.
The “Devils" gathering represents the battle between good and evil, with the Catholic and Andean traditions embedded into one colorful festival.
"La Diablada," as the gathering is locally known, started to be celebrated in the mid-20th century, fusing elements of the Oruro Carnival, in Bolivia.
Since then, residents have been adding new elements to the festivities, with the procession to the cemetery being the most recent one.
