STORYLINE:
The mayor of Porto Sant’Elpidio on Friday said that the tragic death of extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner had ‘deeply affected’ the people of the resort on the Adriatic coast.
Baumgartner, the first skydiver to fall faster than the speed of sound more than a decade ago, died on Thursday, after crashing into a swimming pool in the city during a paraglider flight.
The 56-year-old Austrian-born daredevil, who became known as “Fearless Felix”, stunned the world in 2012 when he became the first human to break the sound barrier with only his body after jumping from a capsule more than 24 miles (39 kilometres) over New Mexico in the U.S.
Witnesses to the crash reported a loud boom as the paraglider spun out of control, before hitting the pool at the Club de Sole Le Mimose beachside resort.
The club said an employee was “slightly injured”, and that no guests were hurt.
The cause of the paragliding accident remained under investigation on Friday, but the mayor said that investigators believed that Baumgartner, who had been in the area on vacation, may have fallen ill during the fatal flight.
Baumgartner, a former military parachutist, made thousands of jumps from planes, bridges, skyscrapers and famed landmarks, including the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.
In 2003, he flew across the English Channel in a carbon fiber wing after being dropped from a plane.
In recent years, he performed as a helicopter stunt pilot with The Flying Bulls, an aviation team owned and operated by Red Bull.
Red Bull paid tribute to Baumgartner on Friday, underlining the research and courage with which he had confronted “the greatest challenges”.
