STORYLINE:
A second march against gentrification took place in southern Mexico City on Sunday.

Indigenous groups near the demonstration area, youth and anti-gentrification groups marched against real estate speculation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Mexican capital.

They are also protesting the environmental damage they say construction and renovations in the area could cause.

Activist Sergio Juaricua is part of a collective that has been fighting gentrification for 10 years.

He works with residents of his neighborhood who have been evicted to build and rent apartments for temporary rental platforms.

This is how the 06600 collective, named after their neighborhood’s zip code, emerged.

They have created their Virgin Mary of Juárez, an anti-gentrification image.

Juaricua said he has concerns about criminalization or repression of the young protesters, and 06600 decided to march with the Virgin in his arms.

The march took place during a heavy police operation, which guarded the route on all fronts, and prevented any mishaps or attacks on any establishment.
