Africa is fast becoming a major player in the global carbon market as countries in the global north ramp up efforts to compensate their carbon emmissions.
The markets are supposed to incentivize industries to cut back emissions. But are they simply letting big polluters off the hook – shifting the burden to poor communities?
Here’s how it works: Companies buy carbon credits, allowing them to offset their emmissions by paying for projects that reduce carbon elsewhere – like planting trees, and protecting forests.
