3. SOUNDBITE (English) Howard Fendrich, The Associated Press:
"It’s been more than a year since Venus Williams has played a singles match on the Women’s Professional Tennis Tour. That’ll change at the DC Open in Washington, where the 45-year-old Williams is scheduled to face Payton Stearns, a 23-year old American who is ranked in the top 40 and won singles and team NCAA championships at the University of Texas. Williams, of course, has a tremendous tennis resume. She was ranked number one in the world, and she won a total of 23 Grand Slam trophies, seven in singles, including two at the US Open and five at Wimbledon, 14 in women’s doubles alongside her younger sister, Serena, and another two in mixed doubles. Williams last played in singles in March of 2024 at the Miami Open where she lost in the first round. Her absence was in part because she needed to have surgery to have fibroids removed. She said after winning a doubles match in Washington, she hadn’t played doubles in nearly three years, that she’s happy to be back on a court, she’s having fun, and she’s thrilled not to have to worry about her health."
