1. Pan of reporters speaking to Sen. Andy Kim on Capitol Hill, UPSOUND (English) Reporter:
"With next month for you, the 90th anniversary of Social Security, do you think the program could go broke come 2034, or do you see Congress acting in time?"
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Andy Kim, (D) New Jersey:
"Yeah. Look, I mean, it’s the anniversary of Social Security. We are coming up on the 60th anniversary on Medicare and Medicaid at the end of this month. And this week is the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act. So a lot of different, anniversaries that we’re seeing right now about some of the foundational levels of support to the American people. Yes, I’m concerned about the solvency of Social Security. And I think that that’s something where there are good proposals out there that can be able to lift the cap in terms of what, incomes pay into Social Security that would make it solvent for decades to come. And when we see this kind of attack against, Medicaid, when we see, you know, challenges when it comes to Medicare and lower prescription drug costs and issues related to people with disabilities, we see so many of these foundational pieces of support under attack right now, and I hope people use these moments of recognition of the anniversaries of these seminal, foundational pieces of legislation to be able to say, well, what comes next? How do we try to honor this going forward?"

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Fetterman, (D) Pennsylvania:
"You know the truth about Social Security is that it is secure. And you could — you can extend it by decades by making very small, small minor kinds of changes. That’s a fact. Actuarially, that’s a fact. And that’s going to require a bipartisan, serious response to do that. We could get together, bang it out. We all know what’s necessary to extend it well into, it’s probably the 2070’s or later. So so that’s there. So until we continue to weaponize it against one party or the other, you know, we could make it more secure. And that’s what America deserves. So be serious about that. It’s a very important program. It’s going to require bipartisanship. And now I’m — I’d be happy to work to participate in that."

STORYLINE:
Democratic Senators are using Social Security’s 90th anniversary next month to put more money into the program so it stays solvent well into the future.

At current funding levels the popular social spending program has a the go-broke date — or the date at which the programs will no longer have enough funds to pay full benefit — of 2034 according to an annual report released last month.

After that point, Social Security would only be able to pay 81% of benefits.

"I hope people use these moments of, recognition of the anniversaries of these seminal, foundational pieces of legislation to be able to say, well, what what comes next? How do we try to honor this going forward?" said New Jersey Democrat Sen. Andy Kim.

The trustees say the latest findings show the urgency of needed changes to the programs, which have faced dire financial projections for decades. But making changes to the programs has long been politically unpopular, and lawmakers have repeatedly kicked Social Security and Medicare’s troubling math to the next generation.

President Donald Trump and other Republicans have vowed not to make any cuts to Medicare or Social Security, even as they seek to shrink the federal government’s expenditures.
