STORYLINE:
China on Thursday hailed the landmark advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice that affirms countries could violate international law if they fail to take measures to protect the planet from climate change.

“The advisory opinion reflects the longstanding positions and proposals of developing countries, including China, and has positive significance for upholding and advancing international climate cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a daily news briefing in Beijing.

Reaffirming the country’s commitment to global green development, Guo said China is “aiming to achieve the world’s largest reduction in carbon emissions and transition from carbon peak to carbon neutrality in the shortest time in history.”

Wednesday’s non-binding opinion, backed unanimously by the court’s 15 judges, was hailed as a turning point in international climate law.

Notably, the court said a “clean, healthy and sustainable environment” is a human right.

That paves the way for other legal actions, including states returning to the ICJ to hold each other to account as well as domestic lawsuits, along with legal instruments like investment agreements.

At the briefing, Guo also commended South Africa’s decision to downgrade Taiwan’s representative office in the country by renaming it as “Taipei Commercial Office” and relocating it from the capital city of Pretoria to Johannesburg.

“China appreciates this and is willing to continue firmly supporting South Africa on issues concerning our respective core interests,” said Guo.

China has claimed the self-ruled island as part of its territory and rejects its official interactions with other sovereign states.
