"The child is suffering from lack of food and drink. There is no food, nothing to drink. Everything is so expensive. As you can see, the flour is expensive, even the water, we spend two or three hours filling up one bucket, one bucket.”

“What is his fault? Did this boy carry a rocket and go to fight the Jews (Israelis)? I don’t care if the war continues. But let the borders open, let the aid in for children. If we leave this boy, maybe soon, he will slip through our fingers. Maybe he will die and we didn’t manage to do anything for him."

13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Dr. Rana Soboh, nutritionist with U.S.-based aid organization MedGlobal:
"It is very catastrophic in Gaza, from bad to worse. Unfortunately, we had five deaths at the hospital because of malnutrition. By comparison to other months, in May, we had no deaths. In June, we had two deaths. We are not done with July, and we have already had five deaths. Of those five, we had one case that died because of a lack of medicine."

"We are really worried this will increase, and we end up with more deaths. We are also worried about the caregivers, the staff are not able to give the full and essential services to the children."

"At the start of the year, we had malnutrition and there were no supplies. But the cases were showing improvement after one or two weeks. But now unfortunately, now the cases will stay for a month or six weeks and show no improvement. From hunger, the child can’t cry or express. Because of weakness, they have no energy. Those four- or five-year-olds can’t crawl or walk. All that because of malnutrition. These symptoms are getting worse."

"Today we are talking about 150 cases in one week of pregnant and lactating mothers who are exhausted and unable to breastfeed and baby formula is at exorbitant prices. They can’t produce milk. The pregnant women are malnourished and result in malnourished babies, so instead of one, we have two cases."

STORYLINE:
In greater numbers than ever, children hollowed up by hunger are overwhelming the Patient’s Friends Hospital, the main emergency center for malnourished kids in northern Gaza.
