"I love what I do so much and I’ve been collecting comics and watching science fiction and horror movies and cinema since I was a little boy. So this sense of gratitude I guess that I feel, it like bubbles in me and I think it fuels a creative process that’s really special for me. It feels, just personally."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) David Dastmalchian, actor:
"I’ve been dreaming up characters, stories, ideas, plots, plot twists, worlds. I turned 50 a few days ago. So for five decades, four decades and now more, I’ve living in this space where now the doors are opening. People are giving me an opportunity to do things, it wasn’t always that way. You know, I was going from one job to the next to make sure I could pay the rent, doing a day job, and then on the train ride home just writing, dreaming up, thinking about these ideas. And now I’m so lucky that I’ve arrived at a point where people go, ‘Oh, you had a successful comic book, now what other comic book ideas do you have?’ ‘Oh, you produced a successful independent film. What other independent films do you have?’ Oh, you’ve done OK writing in the horror space. What other horrors ideas do you have?’ So many people don’t get that door opening."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) David Dastmalchian, actor – on being level headed:
"Thank you for saying that, and I am doing an interview right now. There’s a camera rolling, there’s a group of people in the room watching as I talk. There’s a performative kind of presentation that I have to put up. The truth of the matter is that behind what may outwardly appear like success, joy, achievement, all of those things are true, but it’s still really hard. So I still have to work really hard, and not on just the acting stuff, but on like mental wellness, my sobriety, being the person that I know I have the capability of being. So if it appears as though I have a good head on my shoulders, that’s by the grace of higher power, but also like a lot of work, therapy and, you know, being in really wonderful support groups and just doing what I think… Basically to be on what I call ‘the beam’ every day. There’s about two, sometimes three hours of work a day just to be level. And I used to resent that and be like, ‘How come normal people can roll out of bed, have a donut and just be on their way? Why does it take me so much effort to just feel like I can do it?’ But now… It’s a fair trade for me."
