STORYLINE:
Thais who fled their homes near the Cambodian border after fighting broke out last week have voiced their hopes for the upcoming talks to end hostilities between the two neighbouring countries.
Thai and Cambodian leaders are meeting in Malaysia in an urgent effort to resolve deadly border clashes that entered a fifth day despite mounting international calls for peace.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are scheduled to hold talks Monday afternoon at the official residence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim who is hosting the negotiations as chair of the regional bloc, Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Evacuees remain in limbo. Displaced Thais sat on mats with their families and pets, sorting through clothes donations while volunteers and officials handed out meals.
Farmer Nakorn Jomkamsing said she missed her home and wants the conflict to end.
"I beg the government. I want it to end quickly. Please think about our situation, people who are here. You can do whatever you want, but please try to put an end to this," she said.
Another farmer Yoo Thatsri said while the evacuation center is adequate, issues remain.
"There are a lot of people. Bathrooms are crowded."
Construction worker Pek Srinoi arrived at the center on the weekend after moving from another shelter that was deemed too dangerous and wants the situation to calm down.
"I’m losing my spirit," he said.
Both countries recalled their ambassadors and Thailand shut all border crossings with Cambodia, with an exception for migrant Cambodian workers returning home.
