“First of all, on behalf of the industry, I would like to say that this is obviously not a good day for us as representatives of German industry. Because this deal is a blow to our business. We are facing tariffs that we have never seen before.”

8. SOUNDBITE (German) Wolfgang Niedermark, member of the Federation of German Industries executive board:
"We expect significant losses in growth for our industry. This is particularly unfortunate because we were just entering a phase where we were seeing some positive signs and believed that we were on the right track here in Germany and Europe. This is a serious setback in our efforts to get growth figures back on a positive track. It will leave a very clear mark here, and we cannot be optimistic about it."

11. SOUNDBITE (German) Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry:
"Without a doubt, this new, planned tariff deal is a considerable burden on the German economy and thus also on the automotive industry. Nevertheless, it is an improvement on the current situation, because we have already been paying billions in tariffs since April, and at a higher percentage rate. In this respect, it is a step in the right direction, but nevertheless with considerable consequences for the economy."

"The tariffs are naturally accelerating the discussion about the competitiveness of the location, and therefore it cannot be ruled out that further production will also be relocated. However, we do not yet have any figures or comments on this and must wait and see how the agreement progresses. But it is clear that in times when protectionism is returning, we must strengthen ourselves."

STORYLINE:
German automotive industry figures voiced concerns on Monday after the EU and US agreed to a trade deal a day earlier.
Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, told journalists in Berlin that "without a doubt, this new, planned tariff deal is a considerable burden on the German economy and thus also on the automotive industry."
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a sweeping trade deal that imposes 15% tariffs on most European goods, warding off Trump’s threat of a 30% rate if no deal had been reached by Aug. 1.
