STORYLINE:
Thai evacuees still unable to go home Wednesday on the second day of a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia were being assessed for mental health issues.

Natthapon Tonthong of the provincial Mental Health Crisis Assessment and Treatment said his team has been going around large evacuation shelters in Surin in the past week to help assess and take care of mental health of evacuees who are now stuck in limbo.

"After we began our visits, we often found that they are anxious, because many of them who fled still have some family members who stayed behind to take care of their home. They are worried about that. Also, some are scared or anxious about noises of gunfire, shelling or bombing. Therefore, they are unable to sleep," Tonthong explained.

He said the toll of mental health problem among the evacuees also can manifest in physical symptoms such as headaches and body aches, and their lack of sleep can also cause their underlying health issues to flare up.

Vendor Kanchana Sukjit, 33, said she fled home near the Ta Muen Thom temple with a few belongings and her pet dog Nam Khaeng. She said it was the first time she had to flee her home like this. She said she has been fine living in the shelter, but often got anxious when she read the news.

"I’m stressed when I read the news, like when reports said they were going to fire (a long-range rocket), because my home is right next to a military camp. I was quite stressed that day because I was afraid that my home would get caught in a crossfire," she said.

The ceasefire reached in Malaysia was supposed to take effect at midnight on Monday, but was quickly tested. Thailand’s army accused Cambodia of launching attacks in multiple areas early Tuesday, but Cambodia said there was no firing in any location.

While some spillover had been anticipated in the hours immediately after the ceasefire took effect, a Thai government statement late Tuesday said that a new clash had broken out at at one of the locations where there had previously been heavy fighting.

The Thai army reported exchanges of gunfire into Wednesday morning but said there was no use of heavy artillery.
