4. SOUNDBITE (English) Phylicia Rashad, director:
"You know, theatrically speaking, when you think about it, the stories about families are always the most interesting. One, from my point of view, because it’s something that we can all relate to. We can all see ourselves in it or learn something about other people that we didn’t know. But isn’t family the center of life for human beings? Isn’t it? That’s the core, and that’s why I think it’s always so interesting. It makes good theater."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Phylicia Rashad, director – on her approach:
"I quickly learned that it begins with problem solving. The director does solve a lot of problems, but overall, what the director does – for me – is develop a vision. A vision for the piece itself and galvanize all of the creative energies to move in alignment with that vision, while leaving room for them to add something that I could not see or did not see. That lets everybody have ownership and buy-in, and it becomes creative collective, and that’s inspiring and interesting to me."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Oakley Stovall, playwright:
"She doesn’t let a false moment happen on stage and she’s always a step ahead. She’s lived many lives that go back to ‘The Cosby Show.’ She has a real knack for timing and movement and placement. So, while it will look like on stage (that) they’re just having a great time, there’s precision in what they’re doing."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Phylicia Rashad, director – on how acting informs her as a director:
“Ooh, okay, so, having served as a director, I’m going to be very honest with you. Having served as director, I watched the things that actors do. And at first thought was, ‘Oh, did I do that? Did I ever do that? Hmm.’ But more I would say over and above all that is connecting language. Connecting language to emotion, to movement in another way – from the point of view of watching and structuring it, has informed something else for me when I engage as an actor now."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Oakley Stovall, playwright:
"I want people to talk about this for days afterward. And again, it doesn’t matter to me if you loved it or if you had a problem with it, I want it on someone’s mind. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s seeing a show myself and 20 minutes later, ‘So what do you want to do? You want to go get something to eat? What do you want to do?’ Like, like, even if I liked it, that it goes away. So, I do want to have that impact. I want people to, on the positive side, if you treat someone a little kinder or if you pause for a moment before you say ‘I know what’s going on with him’ because you don’t. Then I’ve done my job."
