STORYLINE:
An executive order issued by President Donald Trump tees up new tariffs on many countries starting Aug. 7 — as the global economy faces another test from the president’s chaotic trade agenda.
Trump’s order, signed late Thursday, imposes a change in tariffs on 66 countries, the European Union, Taiwan and the Falkland Islands. It came after a flurry of tariff-related activity in recent days, as the White House announced agreements with various nations and blocs ahead of the president’s self-imposed Friday deadline, when he previous threatened sweeping new levies would kick in worldwide.
The proposed tariffs have injected a new dose of uncertainty for consumers and businesses still wondering what’s going to happen and when. They are expected to hit the automobile industry especially hard.
