Armenia and Azerbaijan sign historic US-brokered peace deal | DW News

Azerbaijan and Armenia have signed a peace deal at the White House aimed at ending decades of hostilities. The two neighbors have clashed over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region since the late 1980s. Azerbaijan reclaimed it in 2023. Turkey has welcomed the agreement as a boost for regional stability.

The deal gives the United States exclusive development rights to a transport corridor through Armenia, linking Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave bordering Turkey. It’s not immediately clear how Iran would block the corridor.

Meanwhile, Russia — a traditional broker in the region — welcomed the peace accord but warned against outside intervention. Within Armenia and Azerbaijan, the sentiment is mixed.
