1. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Thiago Mostazo, Associated Press:
"I’m in front of the United States General Consulate where a group of demonstrators is protesting against Trump’s 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports. We can see here many people from unions, from leftist social movements, and they are being very critical of Trump and also the former president Jair Bolsonaro, and also siding with Lula in the defense of Brazil’s sovereignty. We can see here many people with signs and also dressed as the former president, Jair Bolsonaro, and also President Donald Trump. This is also the governor of São Paulo, Tarciso de Freitas, lining with them. We can see here signs talking about the tariffs but also talking about Brazil’s importance to maintain its sovereignty and also the importance to keep the trial of Jair Bolsonaro. President Trump confirmed the tariffs for Brazil starting on August the 6th and also created a list of products that will be exempted from those tariffs, like orange juice and aircraft parts, for example. Lula says he’s still willing to negotiate with the U.S., but it’s very clear: Anything related to the former president Jair Bolsonaro and his ongoing trial for allegedly attempting a coup d’etat in Brazil is off the table."
STORYLINE:
A group of demonstrators gathered on Friday in front of the U.S. General Consulate to protest the 50% tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Brazilian exports.
Organized by unions and left-wing social movements, the protest voiced strong criticism of both Trump and Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro, while expressing support for President Lula and Brazil’s sovereignty.
Some protesters wore costumes resembling Trump and Bolsonaro depicted in signs as aligned with both leaders.
Banners also demanded that Bolsonaro’s trial for allegedly attempting a coup remain a priority.
Trump’s tariffs, set to take effect on August 6, exclude certain products like orange juice and aircraft parts.
While Lula says he remains open to negotiation with the U.S., he made it clear that Bolsonaro’s legal situation is not part of any deal.
