"Negotiations are necessary, and we all really want the war to end, just like all the media and politicians, they all talk about stopping it. We are also all in the whole country (hoping) for a ceasefire and for negotiations, because this war will only end with negotiations. Yes, (we) wanted a victory, but victory for us, if victory means reaching 99 borders, then for now the best option for us is negotiations, a ceasefire, and stopping the war, as it is."

5. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Tasak, local resident (AUDIO AS INCOMING):
"Honestly, I don’t care much, because two liars will get together and each will have his own mind. Therefore, it is unlikely that there will be anything sensible there and it’s very regrettable that in reality our leader is being squeezed out in these negotiations. And this is not fair and (it’s) wrong."

7. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Lyudmila Kostrova, local resident (AUDIO AS INCOMING):
"I don’t have any inside information, I just see how many times Trump has set a timetable of a week, all those demands and ultimatums, and then it all drags on. And Putin is not interested in ending the war now. Therefore, he will do everything to avoid this. And the meeting is one of those steps for this."

STORYLINE:
Kyiv residents were mostly pessimistic about the news of a possible meeting between U.S. and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
While acknowledging the importance of the diplomatic process, some felt that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "is being squeezed out in these negotiations."
"If victory means reaching ’99 borders, then for now the best option for us is negotiations, a ceasefire, and stopping the war, as it is," said Ruslan Prindun, a serviceman.
Another Kyiv resident, Volodymyr Tasak, attached little importance to the meeting "because two liars will get together and each will have his own mind."
Tasak added it was "unlikely that there will be anything sensible there".
Putin says he hopes to meet next week with Trump, possibly in the United Arab Emirates.
The news came on Thursday, the eve of a White House deadline for Moscow to show progress toward ending the 3-year-old war in Ukraine.
Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said a summit could possibly take place next week.
A meeting would be a significant milestone in Trump’s effort to end the war, although there’s no guarantee that such a summit would stop the fighting since Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on their conditions for peace.
