STORYLINE:
Palestinians lambasted Israel’s plan to expand its offensive and retake Gaza City on Friday. They called it an alarming escalation in the 22-month war.
"We are very worried about it, and it will increase the suffering, the starvation in Gaza, and also it will also increase the number of killed people," said Adel Attia, Director of the European Affairs Department at the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"It is obvious that Netanyahu is not interested in any compromise, and he wants to continue the ethnic cleansing and the war of genocide in Gaza in order to force people to leave Gaza," Attia added.
Israel’s air and ground campaign has already killed tens of thousands in Gaza, displaced most of the population and pushed the territory toward famine. The timing of another ground operation remains unclear. It will likely hinge on mobilizing thousands of troops and forcibly evacuating civilians.
Palestinian Authority officials in the West Bank said the move was part of a broader effort to weaken the body and foreclose the possibility of a two-state solution.
